Why is flea and tick medication prescription?

Prescription flea medications are designed to provide targeted, high-efficacy protection while supporting your pet’s overall safety. Some oral and systemic treatments work by entering the bloodstream, which is why they are regulated as internal medications and require veterinary guidance. Many flea products are still available over the counter, including certain topicals and collars, but prescription options offer added oversight to help ensure the treatment is appropriate for your pet’s needs.

Safety, Support, and Regulations

What makes prescription flea and tick products different?

  • Systemic absorption: Oral chews and some advanced topicals work from within the body, so veterinary guidance helps ensure the dose matches your pet’s current weight and health profile.
  • Regulatory classification: Flea products that are absorbed into the bloodstream are classified as pharmaceutical drugs by the FDA, while treatments that remain on the surface of the body are generally regulated by the EPA.
  • Additional health protection: Some prescription combination chews also help prevent heartworms, so a veterinarian may recommend testing first to confirm the product can be used safely and effectively.

Why does my pet need an exam before starting medication?

  • Health baseline: An exam gives your veterinarian a current picture of your pet’s health, medical history, and any factors that may affect which flea medication is the best fit.
  • Accurate dosing: Because a pet’s weight can change over time, updated veterinary information helps ensure the medication is both effective and appropriately dosed.

Medical Records & Visit Logistics

How do I transfer my pet’s medical records from our previous vet?

Simply share the name of your previous veterinarian, and we’ll be happy to contact them to request your pet’s medical records for you.

What should I bring to my pet’s first appointment?

Please bring any medical records, adoption paperwork, or other information you’d like us to have on file. If requested, a stool sample can also be helpful for your pet’s first visit.

Can I accompany my pet into the exam room?

Yes. After we take your pet’s quick weight, you and your pet will be welcomed into an exam room together. A technician will review your pet’s medical history with you, and the doctor will join you shortly after to discuss any questions or concerns. Once a care plan is made, your pet may visit the treatment area and will then be returned to you in the exam room or lobby.
